Each year the Small Business Council of America (SBCA) honors a business person by selecting him or her as the Small Business Person of the Year. The Small Business Person of the Year for 2013 will be recognized and honored in person at its 30th Congressional Awards Reception held at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. The purpose of the award is to honor an American businessman or woman for outstanding accomplishments in promoting a favorable environment for the small businesses of America. • Dedication to small business in America as evidenced through promotion of a climate favorable to free enterprise. • Promotion of a positive image of American business through excellent business, civic or corporate leadership. • Leadership in advancing the interest of small business in America evidenced by efforts and accomplishments in affecting the legislative and regulatory environment. To allow the judges adequate time to evaluate the nominees, your nominations must be received by the Awards Committee by March 1, 2013. Nominations should be mailed to: Small Business Person of the Year Committee, c/o Leanne Redstone, Small Business Council of America, 1523 Concord Pike, Suite 300, Wilmington, DE 19803. You may also email your nominations to lredstone@shanlaw.com. The award winner will receive a SBCA stipend of up to $1,000 to pay for his or her travel expenses to Washington, D.C. and will receive national, regional and local publicity relating to the Small Business Person of the Year Award itself. The award winner will also receive complimentary SBCA memberships for calendar years 2013 and 2014. From time to time SBCA members request more information relating to nominees than the general criteria listed above. It is not really possible to adequately describe in advance the type of person who will receive this award year in and year out but it might be helpful to highlight a few of our past award winners. Our 2006 award winner was Fran Jabara of Jabara Ventures Group, L.P. located in Wichita, KS. Professor Jabara has been recognized as a national leader in entrepreneurship by many organizations and has consulted with thousands of small and emerging companies, bringing together the rare combination of both an educator and an active entrepreneur throughout his professional career. The Nominating Committee decided after reviewing all nominations in 2009 that two small business persons would receive awards - Bryan J. Stone of Columbus Gourmet in Columbus, GA and one to Marc S. Levine of The UnitedCompanies located in Houston, TX. Both Mr. Stone and Mr. Levine both demonstrate a strong commitment to the success of small business and are strongly involved in their communities. In 2010, we awarded a husband and wife team from Newark, Delaware. Jay and Kashmira Sonecha of Blenheim Homes, Blenheim Hospitality, and Sonecha Foundation were honored for their efforts and accomplishments as representatives of our country’s small businesses. They not only have created beautiful communities and homes for thousands of people but continue to give back to their community through the establishment of the Sonecha Foundation.
As you can see, our award winners come from many parts of the country and I encourage you to pick a member from your community and nominate him or her for the SBCA Small Business Person of the Year. Nominations should be in letter format along with any other written materials from outside sources to support your nomination.
No nominations will be accepted after the March 1, 2013 deadline.
