small business person of the year

Each year the Small Business Council of America (SBCA) honors an outstanding small business person by selecting him or her as the  SBCA Small Business Person of the Year.  The Small Business Person of the Year will be recognized and honored in person at the SBCA's Congressional Awards Reception held at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., in May of each year.  The purpose of the award is to honor an American businessman or woman for outstanding accomplishments in promoting a favorable environment for the small businesses of America.

The SBCA Small Business Person of the Year Award Committee is seeking nominations from SBCA members.  Nominees do not have to be members of the SBCA, but they must be U.S. citizens.  If you would like to nominate someone for this Award, please send us a full biographical description of the nominee and a narrative statement providing specific information about the nominee's qualifications for selection, together with any supporting endorsements from business and government leaders, employees, etc.  Your narrative statement should include information regarding how the nominee meets the following criteria:

  • Dedication to small business in America as evidenced through promotion of a climate favorable to free enterprise.

  • Promotion of a positive image of American business through excellent business, civic or corporate leadership.

  • Leadership in advancing the interest of small business in America evidenced by efforts and accomplishments in affecting the legislative and regulatory environment.

To allow the Committee adequate time to evaluate the nominees, your nominations must be received by the Awards Committee by April 1.  Nominations should be mailed to: SBCA Business Person of the Year Committee, c/o Leanne Redstone, Shanley & Associates, P.A., 1523 Concord Pike, Suite 300, Brandywine East, Wilmington, DE  19803, or fax to (302) 691-6833 or email LRedstone@shanlaw.com .

The award winner will receive a SBCA stipend of up to $1,000 to pay for his or her travel expenses to Washington, D.C. and will receive national, regional and local publicity relating to the Small Business Person of the Year Award itself.

The award winner will also receive complimentary SBCA membership for one year.
From time to time SBCA members request more information relating to nominees than the general criteria listed above.  It is not really possible to adequately describe in advance the type of person who will receive this award year in and year out but it might be helpful to highlight a few of our past award winners.

  • In 1999, SBCA recognized Rosa Sugranes who owned and operated Siberia Tiles in Miami, Florida.  The 1999 ceremony in the Mansfield Room at the Capitol was particularly memorable because a number of friends and relatives of Rosa flew to Washington, D.C. from Europe to attend the ceremony.
  • In 2001, SBCA was particularly pleased to recognize SBCA’s own Sandy Graffius from Sinking Springs, Pennsylvania.  Sandy received the award based on her operation of a family owned company and her substantial community involvement.
  • In 2003, Susan Rudder Hall, President of Woodbury Box Company, Inc. located in Thomaston, Georgia was honored.  Susan took over the family business after her father’s death in 1988.  She is a successful leader of small business while at the same time heavily involved in civic and community businesses and governmentally-sponsored activities.
  • In 2005, our award winner was Kelly A. Paul, President of The Marketing Department located in Savannah, GA.  In addition, Kelly is also the founder of the Islands Business Collaborative, a professional organization designed to help promote growth in the small businesses located on the islands of Savannah as well as owner/publisher and editor of Savannah’s Island Living Magazine.
  • Our 2006 award winner was Fran Jabara of Jabara Ventures Group, L.P. located in Wichita, KS.  Professor Jabara has been recognized as a national leader in entrepreneurship by many organizations and has consulted with thousands of small and emerging companies, bringing together the rare combination of both an educator and an active entrepreneur throughout his professional career.
  • Our 2007 award winner was Alan N. Kanter, Esquire of Alan N. Kanter & Associates, Inc. of Baltimore, MD.  Mr. Kanter was recognized for his commitment to excellence in both his business activities and contributions to the community.
